The Beauty of Everyday Living & A Gentle Reminder to Slow Down

Everyday Living

When I was growing up in Dublin, life always seemed to be busy. It was school, work, traffic, rushing from one thing to the next. Like so many people, I was caught up in the rat race without even realising it.

Moving to Galway changed that. Living by the sea has taught me to slow down, to notice the little things and to appreciate the ordinary moments that make life so special. Whether it’s hearing the birds in the morning, the smell of an open fire, the sound of the coffee machine starting the day or watching the waves after a swim, I’ve learned that happiness isn’t always found in the big milestones. More often than not, it’s hidden in the everyday.

That’s exactly what this part of Practical & Precious is about. It’s about creating a life that feels calm, welcoming and full of little moments worth remembering. One thing you’ll always find in my house is a small gift tucked away. It might be a candle, a diffuser, a bottle of wine or something I know someone else would enjoy. I love giving people something unexpected, not because I feel I have to, but because I love making people feel thought of.

You’ll also always find biscuits in the cupboard because I don’t think anyone should call over for a cup of tea without having something nice to go with it. I love making people feel welcome. If someone leaves my house feeling happier than when they arrived, that’s a lovely feeling. People sometimes ask me how I manage to save money while still enjoying life, but the truth is I’ve never believed they’re opposites.

I’ll always spend money on experiences. You can’t bring possessions with you, but you carry memories forever. Whether it’s a family holiday, a day out, a concert, a meal together or simply making Christmas Day as special as possible, those are the things that stay with us. Christmas is my favourite day of the year, and I hope one day my children continue the traditions we’ve created together. We open Santa presents first, have a big breakfast, head for a sea swim or a walk, spend the afternoon cooking together, enjoy our Christmas dinner and then gather around the tree to open our presents to each other one at a time so everyone can share in the excitement. We finish the day exactly as you’d expect with movies, board games, far too many sweets and someone asleep on the sofa.

Those are the moments I treasure most. If you asked me what my perfect Sunday looks like, it wouldn’t involve anything extravagant. It would start with a sea swim, followed by a long shower, washing my hair and getting ready for the day. Then breakfast with my family, a coffee with a friend, a roast chicken dinner at home, a board game, a fire lighting in the evening and a good movie together.

Simple. But perfect. One of my favourite meals to cook is a traditional roast chicken dinner because, to me, it feels like home. There’s something about everyone gathering around the table that reminds me what really matters.

Health has also changed how I look at life. There was a time when my world became much smaller, and it taught me never to take an ordinary day for granted. I still live with chronic pain, but compared to where I was a few years ago, I feel incredibly grateful.

It’s one of the reasons I notice the little things so much now.

The sea.

Fresh air.

Time with family.

A quiet cup of tea.

A walk with a friend.

These aren’t ordinary moments anymore. They’re precious. If my husband and children were asked to describe me, they’d probably laugh first and tell you I’m a bit cracked! I’m always coming up with ideas or planning the next thing. But I’d like to think they’d also tell you I’m kind and loving. Because, at the end of the day, that’s far more important to me than anything I’ve ever achieved.

The greatest compliment anyone could give me isn’t about my work or the number of people who follow me. It’s simply this:

“You’re a lovely person.”

If someone said that about me, I’d know I’d done something right.

That’s what you’ll find in this corner of Practical & Precious.

Ideas to make everyday life a little easier. Little touches that make a house feel like a home. Ways to create memories without spending a fortune. Gentle reminders to slow down and appreciate the moments that really matter. Because while practical things help life run smoothly…it’s the precious moments that make life worth living.
